There was always something about this time of year. The leaves fading from greens to fiery hues. It always made me think of him. His birthday was in the fall, after all. It wasn’t just that. Autumn is a cozy time. That’s what he felt like. Cozy. He had a warmth to him that was like hot apple cider. It filled you from the inside out. He was a jovial, carefree man with the energy of a bonfire. Ever bright, and yet, burned out too soon. My hand gently squeezed around Amyn’s as a slurry of emotions filled me to the brim. It had been too long since I had made my way out here. It wasn’t that I had been avoiding it, but I’d been busy with life. Then again, maybe that was just an excuse. Going to my grandfather’s grove was supposed to be a celebration of the life he lived, but somehow that felt overshadowed by a life cut too short.
